PAG-ASA OFFICIALLY DECLARES FRIDAY AS ONSET OF RAINY SEASON

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) officially declared Friday as the start of the rainy season for this year.

Below is the press release from pagasa.dost.gov.ph.

ONSET OF THE RAIN ASSOCIATED WITH THE SOUTHWEST (SW) MONSOON SEASON
May 27, 2011

For the past few days, climatological manifestations of the start of the southwest monsoon season have been observed. These include the appearance of the heat lows or convective activities dominating most of the Asian continent, an elongated area of low pressure (monsoon trough) with its axis extending towards south China sea and northern Philippines, early morning and late afternoon rainshowers and thunderstorms and the progression of southwesterly windflow over western Visayas and Luzon as generated by the cross equatorial wind. Occurrence of Tropical Storm "Chedeng", upgraded to typhoon intensity enhanced the southwesterly windflow as it moves north towards southern Japan. This eventually triggered the total setting-in of the Southwest (SW) monsoon season with its associated rains over the western section of the country. These developments initiated the onset of the rainy season in the country associated with the SW monsoon "HABAGAT".

The southwest monsoon is associated with the occurrence of an intermittent to continuous rains in Metro Manila and the western sections of Luzon and Visayas. However, it is anticipated that some breaks in the rain events (called monsoon breaks) will occasionally occur as the North Pacific high pressure ridge strengthens. This situation usually occurs before the peak of the rainy season during the month of July. The rainy season will start receding towards the end of September.

The PAGASA/DOST will continue to monitor and inform the public of any significant weather changes. For more information, please contact Weather Branch PAGASA at telephone numbers 927-1541/929-4570/922-1996 and 926-4258.

FAMILY RADIO HAS NEW JUDGMENT DAY

Camping Picks New Rapture Date of Oct. 21
California preacher says May 21 was only “an invisible judgment day.”
By Josh Voorhees and Ben Johnson | Posted Tuesday, May. 24, 2011, at 12:06 AM EDT

UPDATED Monday (May 23) at 11:35 p.m.: Harold Camping isn’t ready to concede defeat just yet.

Sure, Saturday came and went without any signs of the apocalypse he promised, but the California preacher said Monday that was only because, until now, he had been a little fuzzy on the timeline that he had prophesied. Turns out May 21 was only an “invisible judgment day” and that the actual end of the world will occur five months after he had been predicting.

“It won’t be spiritual on October 21st,”Camping said on a 90-minute special broadcast of his radio show, adding that “the world is going to be destroyed all together, but it will be very quick.”

UPDATED Monday at noon:  Looks like the International Business Times managed to catch Harold Camping on camera briefly.  "Give me a day, no interviews at all today – sorry," Camping said in the video taken Sunday. "You know this is a big deal, big deal, and I've got to live with it and I've got to think it out. So no interview."

UPDATED Monday at 8:52 a.m.: Harold Camping opened his door briefly Sunday to speak with reporters, telling them that he was “flabbergasted” that his end-of-days predictions did not come true.

“It has been a really tough weekend,” the 89-year-old fundamentalist radio preacher said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I’m looking for answers.”

He added that he’d “be back to work Monday and will say more then.”

Original Post on Sunday at 1:03 p.m. by Ben Johnson:

If a doomsday prediction dies in the forest, does its creator make a sound?

Followers of Christian radio mogul Harold Camping are scratching their heads this morning, after the Family Radio president’s longtime prediction of the apocalypse beginning yesterday doesn’t appear to have come true. Also troubling for those who mortgaged their lives to help his cause of spreading the word: Camping isn’t around to admit he was wrong or make another prediction.

Reuters reports the Family Radio’s network headquarters remained shuttered, and no one answered the door at the broadcaster’s house in Alameda, Calif., after his 6 p.m. deadline for death and destruction passed.

Camping, whose radio network reaches 66 U.S. stations as well as international affiliates, said he predicted the end of the world with the help of Bible verse. He also claimed believers would be sent up to heaven as various time zones hit 6 p.m. on May 21, as the planet was engulfed by giant earthquakes and other disasters, until its final destruction Oct. 21.

“May twenty second will be the second day of judgment,” Camping told a caller on his radio program in 2009. “We don’t know what’s going to happen to Family Radio on that day or to the banks or to anybody else. But it’s going to be horrible. Millions of people will die on that day and every day after.”

This isn’t the first time the radio host’s biblical math seems to have failed him. He previously predicted Jesus Christ would return to Earth in 1994. For those who bought into Camping’s latest predictions—followers and Family Radio reportedly accepted donations and spent millions on 2000 billboards and other advertising to get the word out about the apocalypse—the lack of rapture seemed to offer few answers.

“I don’t understand why nothing has happened,” retired transit worker and New York City resident Robert Fitzpatrick told Reuters. The 60-year-old retired transit worker had spent $140,000 of his savings to help spread Camping’s warning of the approaching Judgment Day.

DOOMSDAY, AS PER FAMILY RADIO

This time, it’s for real, believers say: Doomsday coming this month.

The unexpected and potentially rotten news that the world will end on May 21 rolled into the District on Thursday morning, plastered on a caravan of five recreational vehicles that parked near the Washington Monument.

“Have you heard the awesome news?” the side of the RVs asked, in big bold letters. “The End of the World is Almost Here!”

As if the message weren’t scary enough, the dozen or so occupants of the RVs — vanguard of a national campaign funded by a fundamentalist Christian radio network and fueled by bus ads and Internet buzz — wore highlighter-bright yellow shirts that said “Earthquake So Mighty, So Great.” They offered pedestrians handouts saying there was “ marvelous proof” that “Holy God will bring judgment day on May 21, 2011.”

The Rapture, they warned, is upon us.

A woman waved off the pamphlet: “Already have one.” A jogger ran right past. “No thanks,” said another. A tourist simply said, “No.” Many people said exactly nothing.

Although the District is apparently a tough audience for doomsday forecasts — despite the power here to make something like it happen — many Americans have been captivatedby the idea of the end of time since the country’s beginning. Some have even been so bold as to pick a date. William Miller, who spawned a 19th-century religious movement that remains visible today, is the most classic example: He created a nationwide stir when he predicted that Jesus would return and the world would end before March 21, 1844. (He was stood up.)

“In American history, you have always had a fascination with this stuff,” said Doug Weaver, professor of religion at Baylor University.

End Times, as the phenomenon is known, has spawned an economy that rivals the GDP of small countries. There have been scores of books, movies, video games and albums that revolve around Armageddon and the end of the world.

There was, among others, the 1991 movie “The Rapture,” starring Mimi Rogers and David Duchovny. Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, authors of the “Left Behind” series, have sold more than 63 million books. Even Johnny Cash dabbled in End Times lyrics, particularly in his popular song “The Man Comes Around.”

“This is a cottage industry,” said Weaver. “People really love this stuff.”

And for many Christians, it is a core part of their beliefs. About 41 percent of Americans think that Jesus will return before 2050, according to a 2010 poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.

Prior prophecy

The man pushing the current forecast is Harold Camping, an 89-year-old Christian fundamentalist radio host and co-founder of the Family Radio network, which broadcasts on dozens of stations across the country. His group has sponsored the end-of-the-world caravan and plastered cities, including Washington, with billboards and signs.

This is not Camping’s first end-of-the-world prophecy. In a 1992 book, he predicted that the world would end in 1994. When he woke up in 1995, clearly something had gone wrong.

“It’s just like anyone who invents something or comes to a truth or any technician — they don’t immediately make a finished product,” he explained. “I did not come to the finished product until three years ago. It was at that time that God showed some exquisite proof.”

This time, he insists that he’s right, and by lunchtime Thursday, about 50 area residents joined up with the caravan to support his message. Among them was Gary Vollmer, who took a leave of absence from the Department of Homeland Security to spread the word. He’s supposed to go back on May 23. “But I’m not going back,” he said. “I’ll be gone on the 21st.”

That’s when a great big earthquake is scheduled to occur. “The remains of all the believers who have ever lived will be instantly transformed into glorified spiritual bodies to be forever with God,” Family Radio says on its Web site. “On the other hand the bodies of all unsaved people will be thrown out upon the ground to be shamed.”

Tony Moise, a 47-year-old insurance underwriter from Silver Spring, quit his job to prepare. “It will be hell on Earth,” he said, taking a break from handing out material. “You won’t want to be around on May 22. There will be no electricity, no power, no water.”

Camping, an engineer by training, says he came up with the very precise date of May 21 through a mathematical calculation that would probably crash Google’s computers. It involves, among other things, the dates of floods, the signals of numbers in the Bible, multiplication, addition and subtraction thereof. Camping describes his equations with absolute conviction.

“He seems to be the only one who understands the equation,” said Paul Boyer, a University of Wisconsin historian who studies apocalyptic beliefs. “But he has a very persuasive radio voice, and he preaches with absolute confidence, and there seems to be enough people that believe it all.”

But there are also many skeptics, including LaHaye, who has made a fortune selling books about the end, although he hasn’t picked a specific date. “I would assume he’s sincere, but many people can be sincerely wrong,” he said, noting that in the Old Testament, false prophets were stoned. “Camping is very fortunate we don’t do that anymore.”

A time certain

On Thursday, Brenda Forester, visiting from Michigan, got into a somewhat heated encounter with one of Camping’s followers, citing a passage from the Bible that says nobody knows when Christ will return.

“He will return,” Forester said, “but not on May 21st.”

Another man was so perturbed by the May 21 message that he brought over a woman he found on the street who needed money. He asked whether the Camping followers would give her some cash, because there was no need for them to keep money with the world ending. They did not.
Still, those in the yellow earthquake shirts insisted that the end was near, saying all signs point in that direction.

Boyer said End Timers who pick dates almost always make their prophecies in context with current events. In the 1800s, Miller relied on financial panics. To bolster his claim that “judgment days are coming,” Camping has mentioned the massive earthquakes in Chile, Haiti and Japan, as well as the recent tornadoes in the South. And to top that off, gay people are thriving.

“There has always been some homosexuality in the world, of course, but now it is successful everywhere it turns,” Camping said. “Whole nations no longer consider it a sin, even though it is a sin. It fits into place now — God has orchestrated this to indicate we are right at the end. We are at the threshold of being destroyed by fire and brimstone.”

The end will come sometime around 6 p.m. on May 21 — not 6 p.m. California time or New York time or Hong Kong time. The world will end at 6 p.m. only when it is 6 p.m. locally, Camping said, citing his calculations. “People will see this coming to them from around the world,” he said. “It will follow the sun around.”

Camping doesn’t seem exceptionally sad to at the notion of seeing the world go: “Frankly,” he says, “I wonder why this hasn’t happened sooner.”

BEHIND THE MAY 21, 2011 RAPTURE

Judgment Day? No Way! What's Behind the May 21, 2011, End-of-the-World Rumors

By: NICK CARBONE

Forget the Mayan calendar's 2012 doomsday. One Christian radio network has calculated its own apocalyptic date: May 21, 2011.

You've seen the billboards and heard the ads. The Christian network Family Radio has proclaimed for months now about the impending date, which it is calling Judgment Day. But how did the network come to such a seemingly arbitrary date to basically guarantee the beginning of the end?

The network's president, 89-year-old Harold Camping, is a decades-long student of the Bible who claims that the numbers add up to Christ's second coming on May 21.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Camping cites two Bible passages to determine the date. The Book of Peter implies that the end of the world will occur 7,000 years from the date of the great flood. And the Book of Genesis says the flood occurred on the "17th day of the second month." Taking a look at the Jewish calendar, the de facto guide in that era, May 21, 2011, is the corresponding date. Family Radio predicts that great earthquakes will shake the earth at 6 p.m. on the 21st, continuing for five months.

If the world doesn't end on Saturday, however, Camping will have an excuse to diffuse the doubters. In fact, it's not the first time that he has forecast the end of days. He once predicted that the apocalypse would occur in September 1994, but when we were still alive in October, he reversed his claim, saying that "important subsequent biblical information was not yet known."

Did he get the math right this time? NewsFeed's prediction? We'll see you right here on these pages on May 22.

RAPTURE POSTPONED FROM MARCH 21 TO OCTOBER 21, FAMILY RADIO SAYS

The world, including Filipinos, was frightened by the proclaimed Judgment Day by Family Radio on May 21, 2011. The non-denominational non-profit Christian Ministry predicted that the world shall be devastated on May 21 at 600 PM according to their calculations.

Members of the said ministry even went to the Philippines to spread their so-called prediction. They went on the streets with their plaque cards showing the impending date of Judgment Day.

However, 600 PM has passed on May 21 and nothing happened. Thus, it triggered the dismayed people to rally outside the office of Family Radio in the US on the following days.

Meanwhile, the 89 year-old Harold Camping, Christian radio host and head of Family Radio admitted that there was a mistake on their understanding on the Judgment Day on May 21. The rapture shall continue on October 21, 2011, the leader said in an interview.

THE WASP AND THE PRINCE

A wasp name Pin Tail was long in quest of some deed that would make him forever famous. So one day he entered the king's palace and stung the little prince, who was in  bed. The prince awoke with loud cries. The king and his courtiers rushed in to see what had happened. The prince was yelling as the wasp stung him again and again. The courtiers tried to catch the wasp, and each in turn was stung. The whole royal household rushed in, the news soon spread, and people flocked to the palace. The city was in an uproar, all business suspended. Said the wasp to itself, before it expired from its efforts, "A name without fame is like fire without flame. There is nothing like attracting notice at any cost."

PROFITING BY OUR ENEMIES

King Hiero chanced upon a time, speaking with one of his enemies, to be told in a reproachful manner that he had stinking breath. Whereupon the good king, being somewhat dismayed in himself, as soon as he returned home chided his wife, "How does it happen that you never told me of this problem?" The woman, being a simple, chaste, and harmless dame, said, "Sir, I had thought all men's breath had smelled so." Thus it is plain that faults that are evident to the senses, gross and corporal, or otherwise notorious to the world, we know by our enemies sooner than by our friends and familiars.

THE MAHABHARATA

A Brahman, a great expert in Veda who has become a great archer as well, offers his services to his good friend, who is now the king. The Brahman cries out when he sees the king, "Recognize me, your friend!" The king answers him with contempt and then explains: "Yes, we were friends before, but our friendship was based on what power we had.... I was friends with you, good Brahman, because it served my purpose. No pauper is friend to the rich, no fool to the wise, no coward to the brave. An old friend---who needs him? It is two men of equal wealth and equal birth who contract friendship and marriage, not a rich man and a pauper.... An old friend---who needs him?

THE SNAKE, THE FARMER AND THE HERON

A snake chased by hunters asked a farmer to save its life. To hide it from its pursuers, the farmer squatted and let the snake crawl into his belly. But when the danger had passed and the farmer asked th snake to come out, the snake refused. It was warm and safe inside. On his way home, the man saw a heron and went up to him and whispered what had happened. The heron told him to squat and strain to erect the snake. When the snake snuck its head out, the heron caught it, pulled it out, and killed it. The farmer was worried that the snake's poison  might still be inside him, and the heron told him that the cure for snake poison was to cook and eat six white fowl. "You're a white fowl," said the farmer. "You'll do for a start." He grabbed the heron, put in in a bag, and carried it home, where he hung it up while he told his wife what had happened. "I'm surprised at you," said the wife. "The bird does you a kindness, rids you of the evil in your belly, saves your life in fact, yet you catch it and talk of killing it." She immediately released the heron, and it flew away. But on its way, it gouged out her eyes.

Moral: When you see water flowing uphill, it means that someone is repaying kindness.

PIMPLES: BACK OFF

(1st UPDATE) Argh! Acnes... back off! For years, I've been suffering from pimples and blackheads when I stopped from facial treatment. I couldn't blame myself because I can't tolerate the sting every time my face is pricked. I've tried a lot of creams, solutions and facial wash but they served nothing. I even used PanOxyl (that really costs a lot) though somehow it helps, but could not effectively forestall the growth of pimples. It would kill the pimples for the meantime but suddenly, I would notice that new pimples started to grow.

A lot of factors affect the growth of pimples or acnes. Stress, lack of sleep, improper skin care, diet, etc.

Stress? I have a lot of stress in the office.

Lack of sleep? Well, I'm working in call center.

Improper skin care? Err... I'm too busy now and I can't afford a time!

Below are collected remedies which are natural and home made to fight pimples.

Toothpaste
Toothpaste can help dry out and remove pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. The paste-type toothpaste should be used, and gel toothpastes should be avoided. Simply put a small amount on each pimple and let it dry. As soon as it dries, wash the toothpaste off with warm water.

Honey
Honey has shown wonderful results for making pimples disappear. Mix honey with some cinnamon powder, and then apply it generously over each pimple before bed each night. In the mornings, the mixture should be washed off with hot water. Only three teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon are needed.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
Several different kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables have been known to prevent and reduce acne. Orange peel should be mashed down with water and applied. The pulp of ripe tomatoes should be applied to each pimple and left on for at least one hour before washing. Fresh cucumbers offer an effective way to reduce pimples. A cucumber can be cut into circular slices, and then applied to the affected areas. The cucumber should be left on no more than one hour before washing it off.

Water
Water not only hydrates the body, but it also promotes clear and healthy skin. Drinking several glasses of water per day will help stop pimples before they form, and help diminish pimples that already exist.

Green Tea
Green tea is healthy when consumed, but it can also be a powerful pimple fighter. Boil a bowl of water, then drop a few green tea bags in. Let the water cool off, then stir. Apply the green tea water all over the pimples.

Fresh Garlic
Although the smell may not be ideal, garlic can help reduce pimples. Fresh garlic should be rubbed directly on the pimples daily until they disappear. This method works without leaving any blemish marks.

Mint Juice
Fresh mint juice can help with pimples. The juice should be applied every night before bed and left on overnight. Pimples should disappear within a few days.
